Action in Cricket Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2018 Winter League begins Saturday with 12 teams and 120 participants, a record for the league, which has been operating since 2010.
The league had less than 90 players last season.
The 12 teams are allocated into three groups of four. Each group will play a round robin after which teams will advance to A, B or C championships, depending on their finish in the standings.
Saturday’s opening-day schedule at the Powerplex on Crosbie Road in St. John’s will see six one-hour games, beginning at 10 a.m.
Round-robin play is scheduled to finish March 24, leading to March 31 semifinals and championship matches on April 7.
This might not be the only competition under Cricket NL’s auspices in the near future; it also hopes to host what would be the province’s first inter-school tournament since the 1930s later this spring.
