Ken Peddigrew from the Remax Centre/St. John’s Curling Club is 2-0 after opening-day play at the Tankard provincial men’s curling championship Tuesday at Bally Haly Country Club in St. John’s.
Peddigrew beat clubmate Rick Rowsell 9-5 Tuesday night following a 7-4 decision over Gander’s Rod Feltham in the afternoon.
Defending champ Greg Smith of Bally Haly/Remax Centre split his opening games, scoring an easy 12-3 decision over Justin Lockyer from the Remax Centre in the afternoon, before losing 7-5 to Colin Thomas of the Remax Centre in the evening.
In other games Tuesday night, Andrew Symonds of the Remax Centre beat clubmate Matthew Smith 7-4 and Trent Skanes of the Remax Centre blanked Bernard Bird of Happy Valley-Goose Bay 9-0.
In the afternoon draw, Bird rebounded from a 4-0 deficit to beat Nick Lane from the Remax Centre 9-5 and Matthew Smith trimmed Dave Thomas from the Gateway Curling Club in Port aux Basques 9-2.
The winner of the 12-team, triple knockout Tankard will represent the province in the Tim Hortons Brier March 2-10 in Brandon, Man.
Brad Gushue and his St. John’s-based team of Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker will be curling in Brandon as Team Canada, seeking their third straight Canadian men’s championship.
