Soccer players Tyler Forsey and Jessie Noseworthy were named Memorial University’s athletes of the year and winners of the Butler Trophy during the 58th annual athletic awards banquet this week.
A two-sport athlete, Forsey led the men’s soccer team in goals and was named an AUS second-team all-star. A track and field star as well, Forsey capped off his athletic season at the 2018 AUS track and field championship with a bronze medal in the 60m sprint.
Noseworthy scpred a team-leading 10 goals this season, good for thhird overall in the conference. She was an AUS first-team all-star, and a second-team all-Canadian this season.
She finishes her career as a five-time AUS all-star, three-time U Sports All-Canadian, AUS champion, AUS MVP, twice an Academic All-Canadian, the AUS & U Sports Student-Athlete community service award winner, a national scoring title, and is the Sea-Hawks all-time leading scorer.
Five Sea-Hawks were inducted into the Athletic Honour Society, recognizing the outstanding contributions to Memorial Athletics. This year’s inductees are Noseworthy, who joins her mom, former volleyball star Kathy Noseworthy, basketball players Davion Parnsalu Lindsay Taylor, and soccer players Claire Skanes and Jordi Slaney.

Frank T. Butler Scholarship Award (recognizing commitment to athletics, academics and community): Jessie Noseworthy
Erin Bursey Memorial Leadership Award (best exemplifying qualities of a leader, both on their team and in the community): Claire Skanes
Michael “Beecher” Smith Award (honours the student athlete who goes above and beyond to maintain and foster positivity among their teammates, and within the athletic department in general): Tyler Forsey
Emerging Leaders Awards (given to a male and female varsity athlete who have demonstrated strong leadership skills or leadership potential): Sammi Deakin-Sharpe (basketball) and Davion Parnsalu (basketball)
