Five hundred runners are entered in what is likely the most challenging race on the provincial road race calendar, the Cape to Cabot 20-kilometre Sunday.
It’s the 12th anniversary of the event, which challenges all runners, regardless of ability.
Starting at the Cape Spear Lighthouse, the race takes runners out Blackhead Rd., through Shea Heights, and through downtown St. John's. It finishes with a run up Signal Hill.
The climb up Signal Hill is exactly the last mile of the race, and has been dubbed the Munn Mile.
As for the 20K course, consider this: there’s a 550 meter elevation gain, 450 metre elevation drop, only three of the 20 kilometres are run on flat ground, and the course features four major climbs.
Winners of the Ian Ash Memorial Trophy last year were Mark Greene and Caroline McIlroy.
Greene edged out Seamus Boyd-Porter by only 33 seconds, while McIlroy added another title to her impressive resume, finishing two minutes ahead of Alison Walsh.
McIlroy was 13th overall.
