Brad Gushue and his St. John’s teammates downed Reid Carruthers’ Winnipeg foursome 5-2 Thursday night to improve their record to 2-0 at the Canadian Beef Masters, the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event being held in Truro, N.S.

The two-time Canadian men’s Brier champions, whose lineup also includes Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker, need a win in one of their two remaining preliminary-round games today in order to secure a playoff berth at the event.

There are 15 teams in both the men’s and women’s divisions, with each division separated into three five-team pools. The eight rinks with the best preliminary-round records, after any necessary tiebreakers, make the playoffs.

Gushue and Co., who are the defending Masters champions, take on John Shuster of the United States and Jason Gunnlaugson of Winnipeg today as they look to win their second straight Grand Slam event of the 2018-19 curling campaign. They came away with the title at the GSOC season-opening Elite 10 in Chatham, Ont., last month.
