Hall of Fame Cup high school basketball tournament tips off today

Play begins today in St. John’s in the province’s premier high school basketball championship, the Hall of Fame Cup (Elite Cup).

Competition at the Provincial Training Centre begins at 3:30 p.m. with four simultaneous girls’ games. Play in the boys’ division gets underway at 6:30 p.m.

Opening-game matchups will be based on seeding, with 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5.

The championship continues Saturday morning with first-round winners taking on first-round losers. That leads to consolation games and semifinals later in the day.

The championship finals are Sunday morning.

The tournament will also see four wheelchair basketball demonstrations, two of them coming during halftime of the championship games.
