A couple of provincial Hall of Famers lead the way after the opening day of play at the 2019 Royal LePage provincial women's amateur golf championships at GlenDenning Golf in St. John’s.
Kathleen Jean of Stephenville leads the field in the amateur, mid-amateur and senior divisions after a Day 1 score of 87. That gives her a one-stroke lead over July Gillam, a fellow west coast golfer and member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Golf Association’s Hall of Fame.
Janet Mills of Bally Haly Country Club in St. John’s, the defending champion in the amateur, mid-amateur and senior divisions, is two strokes off Jean’s pace with a score of 89.
Gillam, a member of Humber Valley Resort, leads the super senior division with a six-stroke lead over Sherilyn Beaton of Clovelly in St. John’s.
Judy Drake of Grande Meadows Golf Club on the Burin Peninsula is five strokes behind Beaton after carding a 99.
Afterdamp, foggy conditions Thursday, the 16 competing golfers will be looking for better conditions today and and in Saturday ’s wrap-up round of the 545-hole competition.
