Holy Cross Kirby Group climbed back into first place in Johnson’s Challenge Cup provincial men’s soccer over the weekend, leaping past the Stavanger Dental Feildians with a 2-0 shutout win over the Double Blues Sunday evening at King George V Park.
It was the second straight victory in as many days for the defending champion Crusaders (10-2-0), who dispatched Paradise North Atlantic 3-1 Saturday iat the Dianne Whelan Complex.
Feldians (9-2-0) entered the weekend tied in points with Holy Cross, but with official ownership of first place, having played one fewer game.
The order remained the same after Saturday, when both teams wion — Feildians defeated the visiting St. Lawrence Laurentians 3-1 — but changed on Sunday as Isaac Bonisteel scored at 16 minutes and Harry Carter added an insurance marker 10 minutes later in the Crusaders' victory.
Sam Hawco recorded the shutout.
In Saturday's win over Paradise, Bonisteel (24 minutes), Alex Dolomount (15 minutes) and Jacob Grant (86 minutes) had the Holy Cross goals. JP Arrendondo (45 minutes) replied for still-winless Paradise (0-10-1).
Meantime, tthe Laurentians dropped a pair of games over the weekend, inclusing a 2-1 setback at thehands of the C.B.S. That Pro Look Strikers Sunday in Topsail. Ronaldo Morris (38 minutes) and Erik Mathieson, with the winner at 90 minutes, scored for the Strikers (6-5-1). Stefan Slaney (65 minutes) replied for St. Lawrence (3-8-2). It was Slaney's league-leading 12th goal of the season.
Saturday at King George V, Feildians prevailed on a pair of goals by ex-Laurentian Tyler Forsey (42 and 75 minutes) and Carter Mackey (58). Adam Kelly (44 minutes) tallied for St. Lawrence.
