Dez Lee exceeded 20 points for a seventh straight game and Glen ‘Big Baby” Davis recorded the first double-double of his young National Basketball League of Canada career as the St. John’s Edge downed the Saint John Riptide 100-93 Thursday night at Harbour Station.
The result gave the Edge (9-6), their eighth win in their last nine games and improved them to 3-1 through the first four games of a six-game road trip that winds up this weekend.
Lee had a game-high 25 points and added seven rebounds for St. john’s, while fellow guard Junior Cadougan, also on a hot offensive streak recently, added 24 points, almost half of them coming on an 11-for-15 performance at the free-throw line.
It marked the third straight game that Cadougan recorded a season high in points; He had 18 points in both a loss to the Halifax Hurricanes on Sunday and in a win over the Cape Breton Highlanders Tuesday.
Davis didn’t see any floor time against Cape Breton and it looked as if the break did him well, as he had 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds Thursday in Saint John. He also had five assists, as did Cadougan.
Diego Kapelan added 14 points off the bench for the Edge, while Obinna Oleka grabbed nine rebounds in a game that saw St. John’s trail 42-38 at the half, but take the lead in the third quarter, when it outscored the home side 37-29.
Daniel Dingle had 19 points for Saint John (3-10) in what was the first meeting of the season between the two teams. Frank Bartley and Jeremiah Mordi each added 16 points for the Riptide, who will get a chance at revenge when they host St. John’s again on Sunday afternoon.
In between, St. John’s will travel to and from Charlottetown. P.E.I., where they take on the Island Storm (2-9) tonight. The Storm will also be travelling to tonight’s game, coming off a 128-117 loss to the Highlanders Thursday night in Sydney, N.S.
