Former track and cross-country star Julia Howard of St. John’s is one of the most recent inductees into the Simon Fraser University Hall of Fame.
Beween 2003-06, Howard won 10 individual NAIA championships, seven relay championships and was an integral part of four championship teams during her time in Burnaby, B.C.
Howard enjoyed a remarkable junior season, winning six national titles. She began the year winning the NAIA cross country championship, was named outstanding performer at the NAIA indoor track and field championships after winning three races, and then she concluded the season winning two national titles at the NAIA outdoor championships.
She was named Lorne Davies Simon Fraser female athlete of the year.
At the indoor championships, Howard won national titles in the 800 metres (2003), 1,000 metres (2004, 2005, 2006), mile (2005), 3,200 metre relay and distance medley relay (2004, 2005, 2006).
At the NAIA outdoor championships, Howard was a two-time champion in both the 800 metres (2003, 2004) and 1,500 metres (2005, 2006) and won three 4x800 metre relays (2004, 2005, 2006).
Howard also represented Canada at the 2007 and 2009 World University Games.
