Memorial University’s Jasmine Foran, who was named the Atlantic University Sport female rookie swimmer of the year Friday, turned in an outstanding performance at the AUS championship over the weekend with four gold medals at the Canada Games Aquatics Centre in Saint John, N.B.
Foran, from Bathurst, N.B., won gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, and 200m individual medley.
Veronica Reid from Williams Lake, B.C. finished just behind Foran in the 50m and 100m breaststroke to win a pair of silver medals, while Allison Somers of Carbonear won a silver medal in the 200m butterfly and bronze in the 50m fly.
In addition to those medals, there were also six medals won by Memorial teams in relay competitions.
The women’s 400m medley relay team of Foran, Reid, Somers and Laura Pittman of St. John’s won the silver medal, while the men’s 400m medley relay squad of Ryan George of Deer Lake, Sam Leawood of Mount Pearl, Matthew Rose of C.B.S. and Daniel Sparkes of Corner Brook was third.
Men’s and women’s relay teams in the 400m and 800m freestyle all won bronze medals. The 800m teams were comprised of Foran, Somers, Pittman and Vanessa Legge of Mount Pearl, and Daniel and Nicholas Sparkes of Corner Brook, Logan Slade of St. John’s and Evan Tynski of Summerside, P.E.I. The 400m teams were the same, with the exception of Reid in place of Legge, and Youseff Zaazou of St. John’s in place of Tynski.
CURLING
Memorial University’s women’s curling team gave up a steal of two in the fifth end and one in the sixth end, and that was that as the Sea-Hawks suffered a 6-2 loss to Mount Allison University Mounties in the final of the Atlantic University Sport women’s curling championship Sunday at the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton, N.B.
The Sea-Hawks’ men’s team didn’t reach the final, losing 7-2 to the University of New Brunswick in six ends.
Despite the loss, the Memorial women’s team is still heading off to the U Sports national championship March 24-28 in Leduc, Alta., as the top two men’s and women’s teams earn trips to the Canadian university championships.
The Sea-Hawks were skipped by Rebecca Roberts, and include Chantal Newell, Lauren Barron and Stephanie Nadeau.
The men’s team included skip Greg Blyde, Liam Gregory, Kyle Barron and Ian Withycombe.
Memorial’s 2017 men’s team of skip Adam Boland, Stephen Trickett, Zach Young and Evan Kearley won the AUS and the U Sports national championships.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Sea-Hawks are limping into the women’s volleyball playoffs.
After losing three straight games to the Dalhousie Tigers in Halifax the first of the month, Memorial dropped another three games this past weekend in Wolfville, N.S., losing 3-1 Friday, 3-0 Saturday and 3-1 Sunday to the Acadia Axewomen.
The Sea-Hawks finish the year 8-12, in the fourth and final playoff spot. The Sea-Hawks are playing host to the Atlantic University Sport championship, March 2-3 at the Field House in St. John’s.
