There is no word yet if he will have a cooler full of beer in the back, but John Daly will be driving a golf cart next week at the PGA Championship.

The big-hitting fan favourite has been granted permission to use a cart because of arthritis in his right knee that doesn’t allow him to walk 18 holes.

”The request was reviewed and approved,” the PGA of America said in a statement.

As a past champion, Daly has a lifetime exemption into the tournament, which begins next Thursday at Bethpage Black, a long and grueling course in Farmingdale, New York. Daly, 53, famously won the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick after getting into the field as the ninth alternate.

The last player to play a major with a cart was Casey Martin, who was allowed to use one in the 1998 and 2012 U.S. Opens.

Canadian tour pro Brad Fritsch took to Twitter on Wednesday and playfully asked fellow Canuck Adam Hadwin whether he will be using a cart next week at the season’s second major.

“My application was denied,” Hadwin joked.
