It’s not guaranteed, but the expectation is that something will give tonight at King George V Park in St. John’s.
That’s where the top two teams in the Breen’s Jubilee Trophy women’s soccer league will square off at 7 p.m.
Defending champion Holy Cross/Avalon Ford (6-0) and C.B.S. Kirby United (5-0) both carry undefeated records into the contest, and both have been practically perfect in fashioning those marks.
Holy Cross has scored 48 goals in its six wins, allowing just a single goal in the process, a tally surrendered in an 8-1 win over the St. John’s U17s Monday. Kirby hasn’t scored as much — 19 times over five games — but the team and keeper Sydney Walsh haven’t allowed a single goal, their latest victory also coming Monday as they blanked Feildians Greensleeves 3-0.
That has led to questions about whether having two dominant teams in a five-team circuit makes for the best-possible league. Between them, the other three Jubilee Trophy teams have scored just nine goals, with seven of them coming in Feildians’ 6-1 win over Mount Pearl. And overall, those three teams have been scored on 75 times
That aside, there’s every reason to believe tonight’s contest between arch-rivals Holy Cross and Kirby should be a dandy. It’s the first of four regular-season meetings between the teams.
