he Memorial Sea-Hawks men’s basketball team is in the midst of a six-week in its 2018-19 Atlantic University Sport schedule.
But that doesn’t mean the Sea-Hawks have been idle over the exam/holiday break.
Memorial got 22 points from Jason Thompson and 18 from Nathan Barker en route to a 76-69 win over the Cape Breton Capers Sunday to finish in third place at the annual Rod and Joan Shoveller Memorial tournament in Halifax.
The Sea-Hawks were 2-1 in the eight-team weekend tournament, which also featured AUS rivals Saint Mary’s, St. Francis Xavier and Dalhousie, along with Laval of Quebec City and Mount St. Vincent and Holland College, two members of the Atlantic small college conference (ACAA).
Saint Mary’s downed the host Dal Tigers 69-64 in Sunday’s final.
The Huskies were 3-0 in the tourney, including an 87-61 victory over the Sea-Hawks on Saturday.
On Friday, in its first game of the competition, Memorial had edged Holland College 105-104 behind a 44-point performance from Nathan Barker.
Sunday’s win over Cape Breton served as a bit of a revenge for the Sea-Hawks, who had finished their pre-break portion of the AUS schedule with a pair of 81-77 losses to the Capers at Sydney, N.S., with both of those contests being worth four points.
Padraig Dawe had a dozen rebounds for Memorial on Sunday, while Barker had nine boards and Jeff Damalie eight in the game.
In Saturday’s loss to the Huskies, Thompson had a team-leading 21 points, while the product of Waterford Valley High in St. John’s also topped the Sea-Hawks in assists, with eight. Boris Ristanovic led Memorial in rebounds, snatching eight of them.
In Memorial’s close decision over the Holland Hurricanes, Daniel Foo had 15 points and seven assists, and Kosta Toodorovic added 14 to support Barker’s big offensive output.
Damalie led the Sea-Hawks with 11 rebounds, while Barker nabbed nine.
Memorial, which has a 2-5 record in conference regular-season play so far this season, resumes its AUS schedule this coming weekend with a pair of games against the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds (5-2) at the Field House in St. John’s. And just like those late-November contests against the Capers, these are both four-point games.
Games are worth four points in cases where teams only meet twice during the regular season.
