Three members of the Memorial Sea-Hawks have been named 2017-2018 Atlantic University Sport basketball all-stars.
On the women’s side, Sea-Hawks fourth-year guard Sydney Stewart was a second-team selection, while centre-forward Cameron Longley was named to the all-rookie squad.
Memorial forward Nathan Barker was a second-team choice in the men’s conference,
Stewart, who came to Memorial from London, Ont., led the Lady Hawks in scoring average (16.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 per game) and was fifth overall in the conference in scoring. She was a first-team all-star in 2016-17 and might have been again had she not missed eight of 20 games season because of injury.
Longley, who is from Hubbards, N.S., averaged just over three points and almost four rebounds in her first season.
Barker, the second-year player from Massey Drive just outside Corner Brook, was the second-leading scorer for the Memorial men with a 16.4 average (guard Daniel Gordon (18.9) topped the Sea-Hawks) and was the team’s third-leading rebounder, averaging 4 ½ per game.
The all-star announcements came two days before the start of the AUS playoff tournaments Friday in Halifax. Both Memorial teams are involved in the post-season, with both facing the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Friday quarter-finals.
The Sea-Hawks men are the sixth-seeded entry, while the women’s team is rated fifth going into the tourney.
