The Memorial University’s women’s team blanked the visiting University of Prince Edward Island Panthers 1-0 Sunday, the only win registered as the two Sea-Hawks’ soccer teams opened their 2018 Atlantic University Sport seasons over the weekend in St. John’s.
The good news, however, is the other three games at least ended in ties, including Sunday’s other game, a second straight scoreless draw between the Sea-Hawks and Panthers men’s teams.
Earlier Sunday, Nicole Torraville scored the game’s only goal, at 53 minutes, for the Sea-Hawks. UPEI outshot Memorial 9-7, with Sydney Walsh getting win in the Sea-Hawks’ goal.
Later Sunday, it was Sam Hawco with the clean sheet for the Memorial men, who outshot P.E.I. 4-3.
Saturday, Jenny Bent’s goal at 57 minutes salvaged a 1-1 draw for the Sea-Hawks. Andrea Mahoney opened scoring at 23 minutes.
Walsh recorded the win as Memorial outshot their guests 6-5.
Goals are expected to be hard to come by this season for the Sea-Hawks’ men team, and that was evident this past weekend. On Saturday, Memorial and UPEI were again scoreless. This time, it was Braeden Sheppard getting the shutout as each team had four shots on goal.
Next weekend, the Sea-Hawks are on the road in Sackville, N.B., and Wolfville, N.S., for games against Mount Allison and Acadia.
