Sydney Stewart scored 20 points, while teammate Brooklyn Wright added 17 as the Memorial Sea-Hawks women’s basketball team posted its first win of 2019 on Saturday, defeating the Acadia Axewomen 86-83 in Wolfville, N.S.
Rosie Stanoev added 15 points off the bench and Sydney Ezekiel was close to a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds as the Lady Hawks (4-7) snapped a five-game AUS losing streak stretching back to Nov. 17 when they beat Acadia in St. John’s.
Memorial, which sits sixth in the AUS women’s conference, takes on the Axewomen (6-3) again this afternoon in Wolfville.
Meanwhile, the Sea-Hawks’ men’s team faltered badly in the fourth quarter in as it fell 66-54 to homestanding Acadia on Saturday.
The game was tied 50-50 heading into the final frame where Memorial (3-7) managed a meagre four points, contributing to the team’s lowest single-game points total of the 2018-19 AUS season.
Boris Ristanovic had 18 points for the Sea-Hawks, but no member of Memorial’s starting lineup had more than the seven recorded by Emmanuel Ring, who had the same number of rebounds.
The Sea-Hawks’ Nathan Barker, who entered the weekend as the conference’s second-leading scorer and reigning AUS athlete of the week, was held to five points in 35 minutes of floor time.
Memorial will get another shot at Acadia (3-6) in a rematch this afternoon in Wolfville. The Sea-Hawks, Axemen and St. Francis Xavier X-Men are tied for fifth place, each with six points, but the Sea-Hawks have played one more game than the others.
