The Memorial Sea-Hawks’ men’s and women’s basketball teams hope to get on the winning side of the ledger this weekend when they stage their home openers at the Field House on the MUN campus.

The Lady Birds dropped a couple of close ones last weekend, losing 79-75 and 60-62, and take on a Huskies team which is also seeking its first win. Saint Mary’s dropped a pair to Acadia last weekend.

Memorial entered this season tied for third on the Atlantic University Sport pre-season coaches poll, while Saint Mary’s was seventh.

As for Memorial’s men’s team, it will have a tougher task this weekend against a Saint Mary’s team that is ranked in the top 10 nationally in U Sports rankings.

The Huskies took a pair of games from Acadia last weekend, while the Sea-Hawks were swept by the Panthers by scores of 94-82 and 77-65.

Saint Mary’s was second-ranked in the pre-season coaches poll behind the Dalhousie Tigers, and the Sea-Hawks were ranked seventh of eight teams.

The Sea-Hawks are coming off a 5-15 regular season in 2017-18. Memorial upset the third-seeded Huskies to advance to the AUS semifinals.
