Newfoundland and Labrador figure skating championship in Mount Pearl this weekend

The province’s top figure skaters will be at the Mount Pearl Glacier this weekend for the 2018 Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador provincial championship.

Two hundred and 42 skaters representing 35 clubs across the province will be taking part.

The provincials will identify the top male and female skaters in the disciplines of star, dance, skills, interpretative, Special Olympics, adult and competitive categories.

Skaters in Star 5 to Star 10, along with pre-juvenile, juvenile, men’s and dance teams, qualifying through provincials will represent the Newfoundland and Labrador section at the Atlantic championship April 6-8 in Halifax.

Skating begins 12:30 p.m. Friday and runs until 9 p.m. Saturday’s schedule goes from 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Newfoundland and Labrador section is sending three synchronized skating teams to the 2018 Skate Canada synchronized championships opening next Friday in Oshawa, Ont.

C.B.S. Genesis intermediates, along with Mount Pearl Open Starlites and Prince of Wales Synergy novice, will represent the province in Oshawa.

The province won four gold medals and one silver at the 2018 Skate Canada Atlantic synchronized championship last month in Liverpool, N.S. Finishing first were C.B.S. Genesis intermediates, C.B.S. Genesis pre-novices, Mount Pearl Open Starlites and Prince of Wales Synergy novices, while Prince of Wales Synergy intermediates placed second.
