Newfoundland boxer Carter Butler wins gold at national championships

Conception Bay South teen takes crown in junior 46-kilogram division; three other boxers from province come away with medals

A gold from Carter Butler of the Conception Bay South Boxing Club was one of four medals won by Newfoundland and Labrador’s team at the week-long national boxing championships which wound up in Edmonton over the weekend.

The 15-year-old Butler topped the 46-kilogram junior division at the event, which featured athletes in youth, junior and elite (senior) categories.

Butler won the final in a split decision over Dennis Mirsoane of Ontario.

Butler’s C.B.S. clubmate, 16 year old Mitchell Lahey, claimed silver in his 81kg weight class, losing in the final by a Quebec opponent.

Two members of the TRC Boxing Club, 15-year-old Ryan Guay and 17-year-old James Thorne, came home with bronze medals

Also competing with the N.L. team were Noah Squires and Nicholas Callahan of the TRC Boxing Club and Brandon Leaman of Rock Athletics.

Coaches travelling were Jason Hayward of TRC and Todd Rideout of C.B.S..
