The Newfoundland Rock opened its Eastern Canadian Super League rugby season Saturday with a 48-16 win over New Brunswick at the Swilers Rugby Pitch in St. John’s.

Doug Perry scored a pair of tries in his Rock debut. Angus Porter, Daniel Lantos, Frank Walsh, Owen Parfrey, Jordan Power and Brad Lester also had tries for the winners. Mike Pittman kicked a trio of conversions for the Rock and Porter had one.

The Rock will play eight games in five weeks this season. Other teams entered in the Eastern Canadian Super League season are Nova Scotia and, for the first time ever, P.E.I.

Ontario Blues developmental team, Eastern Ontario Harlequins and Quebec are entered in the mainland division of the Super League.

Next weekend, the Rock travel to Halifax to meet Nova Scotia before playing New Brunswick Sunday in Fredericton.
