Coming off her excellent showing at the just-completed Eastern Canadian championships, where she won three gold medals, Newfoundland and Labrador swimmer Kate Sullivan has been selected to compete for Canada in the 2019 Union Americana De Natacion (UANA) Pan American Junior Open Water Championships in Wisconsin this summer.
The 16-year-old Sullivan is a product of the Mount Pearl Marlins club who now trains out of the Ontario High Performance Centre in Toronto.
Sullivan was chosen for the Canadian team based on her fastest times in 400- and 1,500-metre freestyle races over the last eight weeks, including the Canadian Trials in Toronto earlier this month and the Eastern Canadians, which wound up in Quebec City over the weekend. The Quebec meet saw Sullivan win gold medals in her age group in three freestyle events, the 400m, 800m and 1,500m. She also set seven provincial records.
UANA (also known as the Swimming Union of the Americas) is an association that overseas international competition in North and South America. The 2019 UANA Pan Am junior open water championship will be held at Lake Andrea in Pleasant Prairie, Wisc., Aug 13-16.
