Newfoundlanders Campbell Clarke and Thomas Hagen will be part of the Canadian under-19 rugby team that will tour Ireland in April.
Both are members of the Swilers club in St. John’s and both have experience in a Canadian tour of Ireland, having been with the national U19 side that played three games in Ulster in late December and early January.
Clarke, who attends St. Andrew’s College in Aurora, Ont., was the top scorer and for Newfoundland and Labrador’s bronze medal-winning team at the 2017 Canadian Rugby Championship under-18 tournament in Calgary.
At 16 (his birthday isn’t until July), Clarke is the youngest player on the national U19 side.
Hagen, who plays the hooker position and was also part of the provincial team that finished third at the nationals, has had an expedited progression in the game — he only took up rugby 18 months ago.
The April tour will see Clarke, Hagan and their Canadian teammates playing five games, including three against provincial (Ulster, Munster and Leinster) academy teams which are part of professional organizations.
