Talk about overdue honours

Newfoundland’s Sean Cleary has been named the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) softball player of the year, but for two years ago.

Actually, there was no foul-up or oversight. The WBSC hands out its awards every four years, and the latest, announced at the conclusion of the body’s Congress in Botswana on the weekend, were for the 2014-2017 quadrennial.

The WBSC noted Cleary dominated from the pitcher’s circle in 2015, leading Canada to double gold at the WBSC world men’s championship in Saskatoon and the Pan American Games in Toronto.

The 32-year-old from Harbour Main went 5-0 with 47 strikeouts in 33 innings at the world championship and followed up by going 4-0 with 40 strikeouts in 29 innings at the Pan Am Games a week later.
