You can’t ask for a much better start than the one the Galway Hitmen came up with on Wednesday, the opening day of play at the 2018 Canadian senior men’s fastpitch championship in St. Croix, N.S.
A couple shutout pitching performances and some clutch hitting have the Newfoundland and Labrador representatives  on the right track as they look to regain the national crown they gave up last year.
Jason Hill scattered two hits and struck out 10 as the Hitmen blanked the Summerside, P.E.I., Eagles 3-10 in their first game, while Sean Cleary fanned a dozen batters, didn’t issue any walks and allowed just four hits as the Newfoundlanders whitewashed the Saskatoon Angels 7-0.
Colin Walsh had five hits in as many at-bats and also had a walk in the two games, Steven Mullally went five-for-six overall and Hill drove in four runs, three of them on a bases-loaded double, in the win over Saskatoon.
The Hitmen, who won five straight Canadian championships before losing to Nova Scotia’s East Hants Mastodons in last year’s final have two more games today, against Alberta’s Grande Prairie Pirates this morning and the Wiarton, Ont., Nationals this afternoon.
