Newfoundlander Rosemary Ryan is the 2018 Special Olympics Canada female coach of the year.

Ryan, who is from Kippens, has been a coach with Special Olympics Newfoundland & Labrador for the last 10 years and will be representing Canada as an associate coach at the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi.

Athlete Peter Hynes and team doctors Carmel Casey and Neil Cheeseman are other Newfoundlanders who  will be part of the Canadian team in Abu Dhabi.

The Special Olympics Canada National Awards recognize athletes, coaches and volunteers who have exemplified the spirit and essence of the Special Olympics movement in 2018, which is also the 50th anniversary of Special Olympics.

The 2018 national awards ceremony takes place Thursday in Toronto.
