It’s well over 60 years old, but that’s not why it’s called the Molson St. John’s Senior Men’s Softball League.
The senior designation was earned at the league’s birth in 1957 as the province’s top-level softball circuit.
Five teams will be competing for the St. John’s title in this, the league’s 63rd season, with the quintet of returning teams all retaining the same nicknames/sponsorships as they did in 2018.
Opening games are Sunday at Lions Park, beginning with a 1 p.m. matchup between the Kelly's Pub Molson Bulldogs and defending champion 3 Cheers Pub Bud Light Dodgers. That will be followed by a 3 p.m. contest between The Bigs and NTV Hitmen.
The league’s fifth entry, the Kelly's Pub Junior Canadians, opens its schedule Tuesday against the Bulldogs.
In addition to their regular-season schedule, which will see them play Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at Lions Park, the senior teams will also be competing in the St. John's Day tournament, set for June 21-23, and the provincial championship, which will run Aug. 22-25
The six-team Molson St. John’s intermediate league is set to start its 2019 schedule Monday evening at Lions Park.
