School Sports NL announces its annual award winners

Honours handed out as organization prepares for its 50th anniversary

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador recently held its annual awards banquet, honouring 31 individuals for their contributions to the SSNL program over the last year. Those spotlighted include recipients of the Coach's Service Award, the Honour Award, the Executive Service Award, Student Volunteer Award, the Brother G. I. Moore Student-Athlete of the Year Award, Participation Nation Champion Award and Regional Recognition Award.

Those receiving the latter two honours were recognized at the ceremony, but will receive their awards in the regions they represent.

The banquet also provided those in attendance a first look at the new logo for SSNL's 50th anniversary.

Here's a list of the winners, with a description of each award:

Coach's Service Award

(For a strong commitment to the total development of student/athletes, combined with a long history of involvement in the SSNL varsity program. This award also recognizes the contributions of any coach who has been coaching school sports for 25-plus years.)

Honour Award

(For outstanding service to school athletics at a provincial, regional and/or zone level. The individual will have contributed to varsity school sports over at least 10 years, or will have made a single outstanding contribution. Recipients may be coaches, officials or administrators working in their respective levels.)

Executive Service Award

(For individuals who have served as a member of the SSNL board of directors, or the Varsity or Participation Nation Councils, when they finish their term as a board or council member.)

Student Volunteer Award

(For contributions to varsity and Participation Nation Programs within their school. In addition to being recognized for their efforts with this award, the recipients each receive a $500 scholarship.)

Brother G. I. Moore Student-Athlete of the Year Award

(For student-athletes best exemplifying the ideals of sportsmanship and excellence in their high school sports career. Recipients demonstrate well-rounded athletic proficiency and academic excellence. In memory of Brother G. I. Moore, one of the SSNL founders, $500 scholarships are presented to one male and one female student-athlete from each of the SSNL Classification levels ( A, 2A, 3A and 4A).)
