The Memorial Sea-Hawks scored an Atlantic University Sport-low six goals this season, and allowed only eight, third-fewest in the conference, so it stands to reason today’s playoff game against the Dalhousie Tigers probably won’t be a barnburner.
The Sea-Hawks and Tigers tangle in one quarter-final game noon today (NL time) in Sydney, N.S. where Cape Breton University is playing host to the AUS men’s and women’s soccer championships this weekend.
It’s been a bit of a disappointing season for the 4-4-4 Sea-Hawks, who secured the sixth and final playoff spot in the conference. The Tigers (7-4-1) were third.
In their only meeting this season, Memorial came away with a 1-0 win in Halifax.
“I think it’s going to be a tight, cagey match,” said Sea-Hawks’ coach Mike Power. “It will depend on which team has that cutting edge, which team finishes their chances.”
Saint Mary’s Huskies (6-5-1) and St. Francis Xavier X-Women (5-3-4) meet in the other quarter-final today. Cape Breton Capers and Acadia Axewomen (both 10-1-1) have byes to the semifinals.
Meanwhile, the AUS announced its awards Wednesday, and Sea-Hawks’ keeper Sydney Walsh was named to the first all-star team, along with midfielder Teri Murphy. Defender Keisha Younge was named a second-team all-star. Murphy and Younge are both fifth-year players. Walsh is a second-year Sea-Hawk.
