He didn’t manage to duplicate his outstanding opening round, but Michael Simms still extended his lead in Tuesday’s second round of the Royal LePage Newfoundland and Labrador Golf Association’s 2019 provincial junior golf championships at Glendenning Golf in St. John’s.

The 18-year-old Simms, who golfs out of the Clovelly club in St. John’s, recorded a seven-over par 78 Tuesday. Combined with a 68 from Monday’s opening round, his 146 total leaves him with a 12-stroke lead in the junior boys division, ahead of second-place Ethan Efford of Bally Haly in St. John’s, who posted an 81 on Day 2 (158 total).

Lucas Efford (83 on Tuesday) of Terra Nova in Port Blandford and Alex Dolomount (85) of Clovelly are tied for third in the division with 167 totals.

Ethan Efford is also age-eligible for the juvenile boys division, where he leads Bally Haly clubmate Evan Mitchell (82 on Tuesday) by 11 strokes.

Rounding out the top three is Nathan Young of Clovelly who has a two-day total of 170, and is one stroke behind Mitchell.

In bantam boys play, Karsen Best of Bally Haly leads with a 182 total, but second-place Jack Pelley-MacHardy of Grand Falls-Windsor closed the gap with an 89 Tuesday, leaving him five strokes behind.

In junior girls play, Taylor Cormier of Blomidon Golf Club in Corner Brook was consistent in carding an 83 for a 167 total to hold down top spot over Sanjana Gullipalli of Clovelly.

The final round of the championships is this morning. Presentation of awards is tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m.
