The St. John’s Edge officially open their 2018 training camp today with a new-look roster.
The majority of players had arrived in St. John’s by the end of the weekend to take part in physical testing. Others are expected to arrive early this week as the National Basketball League of Canada team holds workouts in advance of it transferring camp to Grand Falls-Windsor, where the Edge will be located Nov. 3-9.
Of the baker's dozen signed players with the Edge as of Sunday, only three — reigning league MVP Carl English, Desmond Lee and Jarryn Skeete — were with the team last year.
More additions are expected in the coming days as the team looks to get up to 15 or 16 players for training camp. In fact, there was a signing announced Monday morning, with St. John's inking Jared Nickens, who had most recently been at the training camp[ of the Houston Rockets' G-League affiliate, the Rio-Grande Valley Vipers.
Nickens, a 6-7, 205-pound native of Monmouth, N.J., comes to the Edge from University of Maryland, an NCAA Division 1 program. Last season, Nickens appeared in 32 games for the Terrapins, averaging just over five points in 30 minutes of play.
The team had also made a move on Friday, but it was one that subtracted from the roster. St. John’s sent guard Drew Cushingberry, the rights to draft pick Chris Early and cash considerations to the Windsor Express for future considerations.
The Edge play their first game Nov. 18, when they take on the defending champion Lightning in London, Ont. Their first home game is Nov. 23 against the Moncton Magic.
