Andrew McCarthy hit two of his team’s four home runs as the Roebothan McKay Marshall Republic defeated Sportscraft Waterford Valley 10-3 in Molson St. John’s Intermediate Fastpitch League play Wednesday night at Lions Park.

It was the first win of the 2019 season for defending champion RMM, which had lost its first three games on the new schedule.

McCarthy drove in half of his team’s runs with three-run and two-run homers. Phillip Corbett added a three-run blast and Leon Cantwell delivered a solo shot for the winners.

Matt Power had three hits and scored twice for RMM.

Starter Matt Power (4IP, 3R, 6H, 1HBP, 2W, 5K) picked up the win, with veteran Ward Gosse striking out four in two scoreless innings of relief work in the six-inning game.

Cody Traverse (5IP, 10R, 13H, 2W, 6K) suffered the loss.

Aaron Whelan had two hits for Waterford Valley (0-2).

In Wednesday’s second intermediate league game, Nick Pittman allowed just one hit while striking out eight batters as Lafontaine Club of Placentia downed the Conception Bay South Storm 8-1.

Pittman walked just one batter in six innings of work to back up a Lafontaine (2-0) offence keyed by Michael Leonard-Power (2R), Troy Leonard (2R, 2RBI) and Gerard O'Reilly (2R), who all had two hits.

Losing pitcher Logan Power had the only hit for the Storm (2-1), a one-out single in the fifth inning.

Power (7R, 7H, 5W, 1K) went five innings before giving way to Brad Bartlett, who allowed one run and one hit while striking out a batter in his first-ever intermediate league appearance.
