One of Newfoundland and Labrador’s top young swimmers has given his verbal commitment to accept a Division 1 NCAA athletic scholarship at Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth.

Noah Cumby, a member of the St. John’s Legends swim club and 17-year-old  Holy Heart student, is a member of Swim Canada’s national team identification squad, aimed at helping develop athletes for Canadian relay teams for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Cumby was named the 2016-17 Swimming NL male swimmer of the year this past spring after a season that saw him, among other things, win five gold medals and set four NL records at the provincial swimming championships.

The 6-4, 193-pounder also finished third in the 100-metre freestyle at the 2017 Eastern Canadian championships.

Cumby is set to attend TCU and begin swimming with the Horned Frogs next year.
