While the St. John’s Triathlon was ongoing on Canada’s east coast, Ryan Brown was streaking to a win in the shadow of the Rockies at the Ironman 70.3 Calgary race Sunday.
Brown, from St. John’s, was first of 687 finishers in the Ironman event with a combined time of four hours and 46 seconds.
The course consisted of a 1.93-kilometre swim, 90K bike ride and 21K run.
Brown’s split times were 28 minutes and 12 seconds in the swim, 2:03.04 bike ride and 1:24.47 run.
American Michael Boehmer was second and Canadian Dave Van Reeuwyk was third.
Last year, Brown was second in his age group, and 15th overall at the Subaru Ironman in Mont-Tremblant, Que., and he later took part in the famous Hawaii Ironman.
Brown played hockey up to midget AAA and swam with the St. John's Legends Swim Club. After high school he attended Memorial University, where he swam three seasons for the Sea-Hawks and ran cross-country for a season.
