Super scorer Stewart is Memorial female athlete of the week

The Memorial Sea-Hawks will be relying on the skills of guard Sydney Stewart (14), who led the team in scoring last season and was an AUS women’s basketball first-team all-star. The Sea-Hawks play their first exhibition game tonight at the old MUN gym as they take on the Ryerson Rams in the teams’ opening game of the Marie’s Mini Mart Fall Classic. The Alberta Pandas and Winnipeg Wesmen are also competing in the tourney, which continues Friday and Saturday at the Memorial Field House.

Basketball star Sydney Stewart is the latest Memorial University female athlete of the week.

The fourth-year Sea-Hawks guard is averaging 19 points per game, and sits second in scoring in the Atlantic University Sport women’s conference.

Stewart exceeded her average in a two-game sweep of the Dalhousie Tigers at the MUN Field House last weekend totaling 44 points, including 27 on Sunday.

Stewart is shooting 50 percent from the floor — a solid number for a backcourt player — and leads the Sea-Hawks (2-2) with 22 total rebounds through four games.

What’s more, said head coach Mark English, her performance against Dal showed she is also strong defensively.

“She was great on both ends of the floor all weekend,” said English.
