Eight teams in girls high school competition; Host St. Kevin's Mavericks are defending champions

The 10th annual Clarence Sutton Memorial Basketball Tournament begins today at the St. Kevin’s High School gym in Goulds, where the host and defending Mavericks take on the O’Donel Patriots in the tourney opener at 4 p.m. Eight metro-area girls high school hoops teams are entered, with Baltimore of Ferryland and Gonzaga of St. John’s, joining St. Kevin’s and O’Donel in one division. Holy Heart and Waterford Valley of St. John’s, Holy Trinity of C.B.S. and Mount Pearl Senior High comprising the other. St. Kevin’s defeated Waterford Valley in last year’s final, with the Mavericks going undefeated in the event. Proceeds of the tourney go to support the Clarence Sutton Memorial Scholarship fund set up in memory of the former player, high-level coach and St. Kevin’s teacher who died of cancer in 2009.
