Two Newfoundland rugby players have been named to the Canadian under-18 team’s long list for an upcoming Summer Series of three games against the United States July 7-14 on Vancouver Island.
Alex Hickman of the Swilers RFC in St. John’s and Ryan Goodyear of the Baymen RFC in C.B.S. are part of the 24-man squad selected following the recent North American 4 series in December and January against the U.S. in San Diego.
Sixty players took part in the tour.
Hickman and Goodyear were members of the Newfoundland Rock team that won the Eastern Canadian U18 championship last summer. Hickman played for Canada in a U18 tour of Hong Kong last April.
Games are scheduled for July 7, 10 and 14. The first two will act as warm-up matches with the entire roster getting a chance to start one or both games, while the final game will be seen as a full international contest.
They will be played at Brentwood College, north of Victoria, B.C.
Canadian U18 coach Mike Curran said, ‘The ultimate goal is to identify players for the Canadian U20s, and eventually the senior men’s 15s and 7s programs.
“Moving beyond the July Series, athletes will again be evaluated through the U19 Canadian rugby championship as well as various regional school, club, and provincial competitions,” he said.
