The St. John’s Edge have only a couple of days of practice before they must settle on a season-opening roster to submit to the National Basketball League of Canada.
The Edge are back in St. John’s after spending a week of their training-camp time in Grand Falls-Windsor.
The Edge left in Grand Falls-Windsor with 14 players, which happens to be the number NBL Canada teams can have on their rosters — 12 on the active roster and two more on the official inactive list — but word is St. John’s is looking to bring in a couple of more players early this week, which would create more competition for berths on the team.
The Edge and the league’s other nine teams must submit their rosters by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday night, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be more shuffling later in the week. That’s because clubs will certainly be paying attention to those jettisoned by competitors in the final cutdowns.
St. John’s begins its 2018-19 regular season next Sunday on the road against the two-time defending champion London Lightning, the team the Edge lost to in last spring’s divisional final. The Edge remain in southern Ontario to play the Windsor Express on Nov. 21 before returning to St. John’s where they play their home-opener Nov. 23 versus the Moncton Magic.
