With Bursey out of picture, Newfoundland and Labrador amateur men's golf title up for grabs

Gander’s Blair Bursey has conditional status on Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada, meaning he needs to go through the qualifying portion of events he wishes to play.
Gander's Blair Bursey won three of the last four provincial men's golf championships, but he is playing in the professional ranks this year, and therefore won't be defending his title at the 2019 provincial men's amateur, which begins today in Corner Brook. - Submitted/File

There will be a new provincial men’s champion decided this weekend as 61 of Newfoundland and Labrador’s top golfers take to the course at Blomidon club in Corner Brook in the 2019 Royal LePage provincial men's amateur championships.

Because defending NL champion Blair Bursey of Gander has turned pro, the men’s amateur title is up for grabs. So is the mid-amateur crown, since Nikeshantees Penashue, who won that division in 2018, is not competing in Corner Brook due to other commitments.

However, the defending champs in the other two divisions — Chuck Conley (senior) and Don Boland (super senior,) both from Bally Haly Country Club in St. John’s — are back to defend their titles.

This could be an event where it will pay attention to some local players. West coast golfers entered in the event include three-time provincial men’s champion (2012-14) Matthew Tibbo as well as Matthew Bonnell and Andrew Bruce, respectively the winners of the 2018 and 2017 provincial junior men’s championships.

This weekend’s competition will determine provincial teams for Atlantic and national championships, including the 2019 Canadian men’s amateur Aug. 5-8 at Glen Arbour Golf Course & The Links at Brunello in Hammonds Plains, N.S.
