The Queen Elizabeth Pioneers have retained the Fred Squires Shield by edging the Holy Sprit Falcons 2-1 Thursday night at the C.B.S. Arena.
The Pioneers took the best-of-three Shield series — held annually in conjunction with the Conception Bay South Winterfest — 2-1.
In Thursday’s game, the Pioneers’ Dominic Nugent broke open a 1-1 tie with a second period goal and Queen Elizabeth hung on for the victory.
There are two other school-based hockey series played as part of Winterfest.
The Annie Parson Shield high girls high school competition was decided Wednesday when the Falcons edged the Pioneers 3-2 to take the best-of-three series in two games. The Akita Equipment Shield junior high tourney between the defending champion Villanova Vipers and Frank Roberts Ravens will finish tonight. That series is tied 1-1, with Game 3 at 8 p.m. at the C.B.S. Arena.
