The Calder Cup champion Toronto Marlies signed five players to American Hockey League contracts Monday, transactions worth noting in these parts because any or all of the five — all forwards — could possibly play for the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers next season.
The signed players include U.S. college products Josh Kestner, Derian Plouffe, Brady Ferguson and Scott Pooley, who all joined the Marlies late in the 2017-18 ASHL season.
The other is centre Matt Braley, who played as an overager for the Western Hockey League’s Regina Pats in 2017-18. The 21-year-old from Surrey, B.C., had been a fifth-round draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens in 2015, but never signed with the Habs.
Bradley had 79 points, including 37 goals, in 72 regular-season games for Regina in his final major junior season capped off with the Pats hosting the Memorial Cup tournament, but losing to the QMJHL’s Acadie-Bathurst Titan in the final.
