BATHURST, N.B. — The Acadie-Bathurst Titan used a three-goal third period to hand the Cape Breton Eagles their third loss of the season at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre on Friday.
Former Eagle draft pick Ben Allison, son of former Cape Breton Oiler Scott Allison, scored the game-winning goal midway through the final stanza, helping the Titan down the Eagles 6-4.
Cape Breton held a 3-0 lead in the first period but allowed the Maritime Division-leading Titan back into the game in the second period, despite take a 4-3 lead into the third period.
Mathieu Desgagnés and Cape Breton West Islander graduate Logan Chisholm both scored twice, while Cole Huckins also chipped in with a goal for the Titan (4-0-0-1).
Connor Trenholm, Félix Lafrance, Shawn Element and Liam Kidney netted goals for the Eagles (2-3-0-0).
Titan Rookie Chad Arsenault continued his early season success, making 31 saves for his third win of the season. Meanwhile, Cape Breton’s William Grimard stopped 32 of 38 shots.
The Eagles opened the scoring early in the first period with Trenholm scoring his second goal of the season, before Lafrance and Element added goals shortly after to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Chisholm cut the Eagles lead to two late in the first.
In the middle frame, the Titan would tie the game with goals coming off the stick of Chisholm, his second of the game, and Desgagnés, before Kidney’s late period goal gave Cape Breton a 4-3 lead.
Desgagnés, shorthanded, Allison and Huckins would find the back of the net beating Grimard with third period goals, securing the victory for the New Brunswick club.
Acadie-Bathurst outshot Cape Breton 38-35 and went 0-for-4 on the power play. Cape Breton was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
The Eagles and Titan will complete the two-game weekend series on Saturday. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre.
