Capers women finish AUS basketball regular season with win; men lose to X-Men in Antigonish

Both teams will play in the Subway AUS championship tournament next week in Halifax

ANTIGONISH, N.S. — The Cape Breton Capers women’s basketball team finished the Atlantic University Sport regular season with a win on Friday.

The Capers posted a 79-70 victory over the St. Francis Xavier X-Women at Court K Court in Antigonish.

Hailey MacLeod and MacKenzee Ryan both had team-high 21 points in the game for the Capers (9-11). Monique Calliste chipped in with 17 points.

Markley Bonnick had a game-high 32 points for the X-Women (3-17). Alliyah Fraser had 13 points off the bench, while Karina Sarai scored eight points.

In men’s action, Cape Breton was defeated 93-78 by the X-Men.

Azaro Roker had a game-high 24 points for St. Francis Xavier (11-9). Justin Andrews and Avan Nava both dropped 16 points in the win.

Osman Omar recorded 20 points for the Capers (8-12). Paul Watson netted 13 points, and CJ Bennett notched 12 points off the bench.

Both Capers teams will play in the AUS championship tournament, Feb. 28 to March 1, at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax.
