CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The number of game misconducts and major penalties noticed by Hockey P.E.I. officials in January stabilized in February.
After seeing an alarming increase in incidents, with the majority involving repeat offenders, the branch’s discipline and ethics committee chairman penned a memo to association and league co-ordinator in late January.
“It seems as though things have calmed down,” Barry Thompson said recently.
“We are not seeing a continued increased.”
The increase in January was noticed at the under-15 and under-18 levels in both boys’ and girls’ hockey. They were for serious type penalties, including fighting.
Thompson said the memo’s message was well-received.
“I think that message got everybody talking a little bit,” he said.
“I think it just made them more aware of what was going on, which in turn has had an impact.”
