GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, N.L. — Senior hockey fans in central Newfoundland can circle Feb. 1 on their calendars.
That is when the Central West Senior Hockey League is scheduled to start as the two-team league kicks things off at the Gander Community Centre when the Gander Flyers play the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts.
The following day, the teams will play at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium in Grand Falls-Windsor.
Since the announcement of a 12-game series between the Flyers and Cataracts in December, fans have been clamoring for a glimpse at a game schedule.
Right now, just a quarter of the schedule has been put together as the league waits to see if a third team from either the West Coast Senior Hockey League or the East Coast Senior Hockey League will agree to interlocking play.
“We couldn’t wait any longer,” said Central West Senior Hockey League president Dave Canning.
After the Feb. 1 weekend, the next time the Cataracts and Flyers hit the ice will be Feb. 15-16.
In the meantime, the league continues its quest to find a third team.
A meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 20, between representatives of all three senior hockey leagues.
