Ryan Day’s goal with 31 seconds left in regulation time was the game-winner as the CBR Renegades stunned the homestanding Mount Pearl Blades 5-3 Sunday night to grab a two-game lead in the best-of-seven Mary Brown’s St. John’s Junior Hockey League final.
The Renegades, who finished second to the defending champion Blades in the regular-season standings, opened the series with a 6-3 win Saturday night.
Sunday at The Glacier in Mount Pearl, the Blades led 3-2 after 40 minutes, but CBR tied it up on Blake Fudge’s goal early in the third. Tyler Wall sealed the win with an empty net goal, his second of the night. Dominic Nugent opened scoring for the Renegades.
Tyler Power, Colin O’Neill and Kyle Preston had the Mount Pearl goals.
Jungle Jim’s players of the game were Day and Blades defenceman James O’Brien, who logged big minutes on the blueline.
Game 3 of the series, which would have to be considered a must-win game for Mount Pearl, is 8 p.m. Thursday at The Glacier.
Saturday night, Nick Gosse was the big gun for the Renegades with two goals, and assists on CBR’s other four tallies at the C.B.S. Arena. Wall fired three goals, and Fudge had the other.
Michael Broders, Brandon Knight and Jared Milley replied for the Blades. Both Knight and Milley played major midget hockey this season and are affiliated players. Grant Thompson chipped in with two assists.
Wall and Broders were Jungle Jim’s players of the game.
