The CBR Renegades are 0-2 after opening-day play at the Don Johnson Memorial Cup in Kensington, P.E.I.

The Renegades, winners of the Mary Brown’s St. John’s Junior Hockey League championship this year, dropped a 4-2 decision to the Sackville, N.S. Blazers in their first game Wednesday, before losing 5-4 to the host Kensington Vipers in the evening game at the Atlantic junior B hockey championship.

Against the Blazers, the Renegades jumped out to a two-goal lead, but the Newfoundland and Labrador representative couldn’t hang on. Blake Fudge and Tyler Wall staked CBR to a 2-0 lead in the first period, until the Blazers scored with one second remaining in the opening stanza.

The Blazers would tie it up in the second period, and scored the winning and insurance goals in the third.

In the nightcap, the Renegades staged a late rally but it was too little, too late in the 5-4 loss.

CBR trailed 2-1 after the first period and 5-2 after 40 minutes – both goals coming from Nick Gosse – before scoring a pair in the third from Gosse, to complete the hat trick, and Blake Fudge to make it close.

But that’s as far as the Renegades would get.

Gosse assisted on the Fudge goal for a four-point night, and Tyler Nickson collected three assists.

CBR plays Western Red Wings from P.E.I. 4:30 p.m. (NL time) Thursday.
