Saltos Gymnastics Club is introducing a brand new program structure for the 2018-19 season.

Saltos executive director Jeff Young said the club is completely restructuring both the competitive and recreational side of the sport in an effort to make it more streamline and flow better into each other while providing athletes with some new transferable skills that will be more functional for both everyday life and competitive gymnastics.

The new program structure, catering to the 500 athletes who train under the club’s logo, is designed by Saltos head coach Kevin Wenning.

Wenning took over the head coaching duties at Saltos in September of 2017 and focused his energy on evaluating the existing program and seeing where he could implement positive changes for all hands.

The club is moving away from the present Can-Gym system, a national generic gymnastics structure similar to swimming with the progress of athletes recognized by badge levels.

Wenning has used similar programs to help groom gymnastics in clubs based in both Quebec and the United States and Young welcomes the change in direction.

“It’s more cutting edge and the benefits have been proven in past clubs,” he said.

Details of the new program structure and how it will be more user friendly for both athletes and parents will be outlined at a public meeting scheduled for June 26 7 p.m. at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.
