Sea-Hawks 2-1 in hoops tourney; cross-country’s Moulton fourth in Moncton

The Memorial Sea-Hawks posted a 2-1 record in the four-team Marie’s Mini Mart Fall Classic women’s basketball tournament held at the Field House over the weekend.

The Ottawa Gee Gees, who went 3-0, served the Sea-Hawks their only loss, a 77-60 defeat Saturday evening. On Friday, Memorial slipped past the Manitoba Bisons 78-75 and defeated Brock Badgers 83-52 last Thursday.

The Sea-Hawks had balanced scoring throughout all three games. Senior Sydney Stewart of Sarnia, Ont. led the way, averaging 16.3 points per game for the weekend. She was named to the tournament all-star team.

Fourth-year Haille Nickerson of Grimsby, Ont. averaged 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Brooklynn McAlear from Ottawa was named the tournament MVP, leading the Gee-Gees to a perfect 3-0 record.

The Sea-Hawks open the AUS season on the road, travelling to UPEI for a weekend series Nov. 3-4.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The Sea-Hawks’ Levi Moulton finished fourth overall at the University of Moncton Cross-County Classic over the weekend.

Memorial sent three female runners and five male runners to Moncton event.

Moulton finished the 8K race in a time of 28:28.10. Tyler Cole turned in a strong performance for Memorial, finishing 9th overall in 29:54.50. The Sea-Hawks’ other male finishers were Nick Snow (14th overall, 30:24.10), Alexander Pittman (24th overall, 31:56.90) and Aaron Wilcox (27th overall, 32:55.50).

The men were able to secure 3rd place overall in the team event, finishing behind St. FX and Dalhousie.

Representing the women’s team for the 6K event were Hannah Cooke, Danielle Seviour and Katrina Lynn Picco. Cooke was the Sea-Hawks’ top finisher with a time of 26:50.20 (18th overall). Seviour placed 21st overall in 27:24.20, with Picco placing 23rd in 28:19.00.
