The 2019 Scotties Tournament of Hearts drew to a close Wednesday morning for the Newfoundland and Labrador representative following an 8-4 loss to Team Canada at Centre 200 in Sydney, N.S.

The team skipped by Kelli Sharpe from the Remax Centre (St. John’s Curling Club) finished the event with a 1-6 record, and failed to reach the top four in Pool B. They closed out the Scotties Wednesday night with a 10-5 loss to New Brunswick.

Eight teams — the top four in Pools A and B — now advance to the championship pool which starts play today.

Sharpe, vice skip Stephanie Guzzwell, Beth Hamilton and Michelle Jewer lost their opener 13-4 to P.E.I., but rebounded for a 12-4 win over the Yukon Territory. Then came five straight losses — 8-4 to the Northwest Territories, 8-5 to Casey Scheidegger’s wild card entry, 8-4 to Saskatchewan and Wednesday’s setbacks to Jennifer Jones and her Team Canada squad and New Brunswick.

Unlike past years, there is no seeding pool for the eight teams that came up short of reaching the championship pool.
